Statement issued by the al-Nimr family
The world, as well as the Saudi society, was shocked today, Saturday, January 02, 2016, by the communique released by the Saudi Ministry of Interior announcing the execution of 47 Saudi citizens, which were referred to as terrorists!
Among those that were executed was his eminence Ayatollah Nimr Baqer al-Nimr, who was scholar of high caliber and a source of pride for academic circles in religious seminaries. He was a shining example for peaceful and non-violent protest. He advocated personal responsibility and courageously called for the legitimate civil rights [of Saudis] and had renounced sectarianism for more than four decades.
We denounce and condemn this unjust killing, which exemplifies the killing of wisdom, moderation, and betrayal of the peaceful means of protest the late Sheikh followed. He had always rejected and denounced the use of arms and violence, which is evidenced by his sermons and statements.
We regret that international pleas, both from friendly states and individuals, as well as from within the Kingdom; namely by the religious scholars of Ahsaa and Qatif, went unheeded by the government.
As we as we extend our condolences to the Muslim world, we call on our community to follow in the footsteps of the martyred Sheikh by exercising restraint and self-control.
