They learned more about Universal Declaration of human rights, its history, the drafting committee and the challenges that the drafters had. The students also learned how to navigate websites of UN and Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
By referring to human rights as one of the three main pillars of the UN, during navigating through the UN website, the participants got familiar with UN bodies related to human rights such as Human Rights Council and universal periodic review.
At the same time the participants got more familiar with UN document symbols and learnt how to use databases such as Audiovisual Library of International Law. UN Dag Hammarskjold Library’s research guide on human rights was also introduced as well as the Charter-based Body and Treaty Body Databases. UNIC Reference Assistant Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami, as the facilitator of the workshop, informed the participants that the UN General Assembly proclaimed 10 December as Human Rights Day in 1950, to bring to the attention ‘of the peoples of the world’ the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.
Professor Pouria Askari who organized the workshop and accompanied the students, said that the participants found the workshop very useful.
