ODVV’s Statement on Universal Human Rights Day

More than 72 years have passed since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a declaration which calls for equality, freedom and justice for all Mankind regardless of race, religion, gender and colour of skin.
This year, the United Nations has set its slogan for Universal Human Rights Day based on COVID-19, “Recover Better, Stand for Human Rights”. To-date more than 67 million have been infected and 1.5 million have died by this virus around the world.
The right to public and universal health and hygiene is one of the basic of human rights which this year with the outbreak and spread of COVID-19 must be further noted.
While countries are struggling to contain this disease and its economic, political and social impacts, our country’s task in the fight against this deadly pandemic is much harder than other countries of the world due to extensive and inhuman unilateral sanctions imposed by America. It is to an extent that in the first months of the outbreak of this virus there were a lot of problems in getting hold of COVID-19 test kits and oxygen producing equipment.
The thing that must be noted on Universal Human Rights Day with regards to reports of nationwide vaccinations inn countries, is the fair distribution of this vaccine among all countries of the world from the access levels and suitable time-lining aspects.
The UN and its specialized agencies on the subject of health (World Health Organization), as an international organization to which most countries have memberships, must supervise the way this vaccine is distributed and its availability and prevent a gap appearing between developed and underdeveloped countries.
The ODVV reiterates that political differences between countries which in our country’s case have surfaced in the form of extensive sanctions, must not cause prevention of access to these vaccines and more importantly, the prevention and treatment process of this virus.
We commemorate this day with the hope that a time comes when the dark shadows of discriminations, injustices and bullying due to the unilateral behavior and actions of some countries are lifted from the United Nations.
