The prior success of the NPT and the apparent firmness of member states’ agreement as to its importance, however, are not sufficient to guarantee its effectiveness in the future.
Over the past decade, growing tensions among the major nuclear powers have been accompanied by the intensifying risk of nuclear proliferation, nuclear competition, and nuclear weapons use.
In fact, in addition to non-proliferation, equal attention should be paid to the other two main pillars, disarmament and the right to peaceful use of nuclear technology.
